NEUROFIBRES is a research project that will investigate the efficacy of an electroactive implant to repair the spinal cord. The planned research programme will only use experimental animals (rodents and pigs), with clinical interventions in humans falling out the scope of the present proposal. Hence, no recruitment of patients afflicted with spinal cord injury or other neurological diseases will be carried out by any of the participant organisations. Nevertheless, one of the objectives of the experiments involving pigs is to attain the technical specifications needed to fabricate a novel medical device showing both electrical safety and functional efficacy. It is our expectation that the project will produce an implant that may have a positive risk/benefit balance for patients and this will be tested in a future human clinical trial.
